Chapter 10

Isserley picks up a hitchhiker without having a conversation first. Back at the farm she follows the men down and watches the preparation of the vodsel.

EVENTS

  • Isserley drives past a hitchhiker and decides not to pick him up because she finds him too puny and scrawny.
  • She picks up another hitcher after driving around for about five and a half hours.
  • They sit in silence for the whole ride while the hitchhiker studies Isserley very closely until she finally presses the icpathua toggle.
  • She parks her car, presses the button to darken the windscreen and feels unusually calm and is even breathing perfectly normally, even though she always breathes very fast during and after she has pressed the toggle.
  • She sheds two tears after bending over to open the glove compartment.
  • On her way back to Ablach Farm, Isserley comes to think that it might be the event that occurred a day or two before that has made her upset.
  • When driving over Rabbit Hill she feels as if something inside of her is trapped and she knows just the way to fix it.
  • Back at the farm she toots the horn for the men to come out, and sees Ensel and two other men come out, Ensel keeps asking if she is well and to his surprise, Isserley tells him that she wants to come with them.
  • They reach Transit Level where all the men are gathered around the Cradle.
  • The men undress the hitchhiker and Unsel places the vodsel onto the Cradle.
  • Firstly, Unsel places two silver tools in the vodsel’s mouth and carves out the tongue, and then he removes the testicles.
  • Isserley is annoyed that it is over so fast.
  • Isserley and Unsel talk, and minutes later the now-paralyzed hitchhiker is brought back to the Cradle and seems to remember seeing Isserley before. He is so focused on figuring out who she is that he doesn’t seem to notice what is going on around him, then suddenly Unsel slashes open the arteries in the vodsel’s neck.
  • Isserley exclaims ‘Yes! Yes!’, and Unsel along with Ensel try to tell her to go away since she clearly isn’t feeling well. When she won’t listen to them, all of the men grab her and suddenly the walls and the ceiling gulp shut on her, leaving her in total darkness.

RELATIONSHIPS AND CONFLICTS

On the road she meets the hitchhiker. (Rabbit Hill) At Ablach Farm she follows down below. There are conflicts between Isserley and Unsel when Isserley refuses to leave the “operation.”

SETTING

Most part of chapter 10 is about Isserley and the hitchhiker sitting in her car all quiet. After she flips the icpathua toggle and returns to the farm, she acts differently and even wants to join the men on the Transit Level to watch the process of dealing with the vodsel. She usually just goes back to her place to rest after coming back but this time she insists on coming which she before has always tried to avoid.

THEME/S

Like in most of the other chapters, there is the ‘hunt’ for hitchhikers but now Isserley makes a decision to follow down below to watch the preparation of the vodsel, giving us readers a stronger picture of the slaughter.

SYMBOLS/MOTIFS

Every time Isserley sees a hitchhiker she drives past at least twice to get a good look on the guy, she always goes for the well-built, broad-shouldered and roughneck kind of guy.

DRAMATURGY

The increase in tempo comes when she chooses the hitchhiker without conversation, because of her hatred for humans.

MEMORABLE

I will probably remember this chapter mainly because of the description the hitchhiker gives of Isserley, how he mentions pretty much everything there is to know about her appearance. I will also remember this chapter because of how Isserley suddenly wants to come with the men to watch the part when they process the man she brought back from the road.
